The Indian wrestling icon Vinesh Phogat has issued a media statement to address the show-cause notice issued by the Wrestling Federation of India. The federation's notice detailed the controversies surrounding her disqualification from the Paris 2024 Olympics. Vinesh Phogat on the contrary, claimed that she has ticked off every box required for a retired athlete to return back to the sport. She is firm on her comeback and she believes that the notice and the actions taken by the WFI is exaggerated and not based on true events.

Vinesh Phogat being barred from participation is based entirely on the athlete’s violation in the gold-medal bout in the 2024 Olympics. While the WFI claims she remains ineligible until June 26, 2026, claiming that she hasn’t met the requirements completely, Vinesh has produced official confirmation from the International Testing Agency (ITA). According to her statement, she was cleared to resume official training and competition on January 1, 2026. This clearance could play a key role in her participation in the tournaments as that is one of the most essential documents. Vinesh insists her return is fully sanctioned by United World Wrestling (UWW) and complies with the 2021 WADA Code.

Vinesh Phogat challenged the WFI allegations while reaffirming her determination to return to the mat

The dispute highlights a significant rift between Vinesh Phogat and the WFI as Vinesh has systematically addressed the WFI's allegations. Vinesh argues that the WFI is using outdated or misinterpreted data. She claims the ITA and UWW have already approved her participation for the 2026 season. The WFI mentioned "whereabouts failures," but the athlete claims that there has been no violation as such and that it could be a misinterpretation. Regarding claims about her weight category changes during the 2024 trials, she noted that the then-governing Ad-Hoc Committee had no objections at the time.

Vinesh has requested 14 days to submit a comprehensive legal response to the federation. Despite the looming shadow of the show-cause notice, her arrival in Gonda signals her intent to let her performance on the mat do the talking. "I will establish my innocence," she stated firmly, emphasizing that her focus remains on returning to the sport. As the wrestling community watches closely, this battle will be primarily based on the scars left on the WFI due to the Paris 2024 Olympics and Vinesh Phogat, awaiting a return to the sport.
