BCCI has announced Team India for the upcoming white-ball series against Australia to be played from October 19 to November 8, 2025. Veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have returned to the ODI squad but the former won’t be the skipper of India’s 50-over team as Shubman Gill has replaced him in the leadership role. Shreyas Iyer has been appointed Shubman's deputy and several netizen are expressing their discontent on the board’s decision to prefer Gill over the 30-year in the top post.

Shubman Gill, as India’s Test skipper, has done a phenomenal job, so far, but in the Asia Cup 2025, he failed to justify his role as opener and vice-captain. On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer looked stunning as Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. An X user named Rajiv wrote, “Everyone knows that it was Shreyas Iyer who deserved India's captaincy after Rohit Sharma. But Gautam Gambhir wanted a puppet captain, I wish for downfall of Gambhir more than ever!!!!”

Below are some of the posts on X about Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer duo getting leadership role in ODIs:

Shubman Gill’s performance in Asia Cup 2025

Shubman Gill made his T20I comeback after 13 months with his appearance in the Asia Cup 2025. The right-handed batter was tasked to deliver fierce starts to the team with Abhishek Sharma but he looked ineffective as a batter. However, he could score only 127 runs in seven games at an average of 21.16 at a mediorce strike-rate.

Shreyas Iyer wasn’t picked in India’s Asia Cup squad and his supporters came heavily on the BCCI then as well. In IPL 2025, Iyer was the most successful batter with 604 runs in 17 outings at a breathtaking strike rate of 175.07.
