Former England opener Marcus Trescothick, who is the assistant coach of the team currently, feels Harry Brook and his men should elevate themselves on the ICC One-Day Internationals (ODI) ranking chart to secure a spot at the World Cup 2027. As hosts, South Africa and Zimbabwe have already qualified for the mega 50-over event. With eight positions left, the English side have to play quality cricket to feature in the tournament to be played after two years. After losing the second ODI against South Africa at the iconic Lord’s, the hosts will play for pride in the third ODI on Sunday, September 7, as the Proteas have taken an unassailable lead of 2-0.
Speaking to the media on September 6, Trescothick raised concerns regarding his team’s qualification for the World Cup 2027. "If you look solely in terms of making sure we qualify for the World Cup, that is the situation we find ourselves in at the moment. We're in an interesting position where we need to climb those rankings. Longer term there's also a bigger picture and we need to look at being at the top of those rankings and beyond. We want to go and compete in the biggest competitions like we did in 2019," he remarked.
England’s performance in ODI cricket in 2025
In 2025, England have participated in four ODI competitions, thus far. In January, they toured India and received a 0-3 hammering at the hands of the Men in Blue. Their next campaign was in February, where they lost their all three Champions Trophy group matches in Pakistan and got knocked out of the tournament.
Following the Champions Trophy debacle, Jos Buttler resigned from the captaincy role and Harry Brook got the reins of the side. He started his journey as a leader confidently with 3-0 triumph against the West Indies, at home. However, when Brook and co. squared off against the high-quality South African side, they got completely outplayed in the first two ODIs.
