Cricket Australia has announced the list of players that has been nationally contracted for the 2026-27 season. There have been several changes in the squad, with some notable names like Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Short and Matt Renshaw missing out. They have a busy schedule coming up in this calendar year, and they will be hopeful that they have made the right calls to include some fresh talent in the list of contracted players.
The decision to grant contracts to the young prospects of the side, like Todd Murphy, Brendan Doggett and Jake Weatherald, can do a world of good as it shows the trust of the management in its players. However, the exclusion of experienced players such as Jhye Richardson, Matt Renshaw and Glenn Maxwell might have raised a few eyebrows. George Bailey, the Chairman of Selectors, emphasised that they have a busy schedule for 12-18 months and that they will have to utilise the depth outside the contracted list as well.
Long-Term Fitness Prioritised for Jhye Richardson
"I think Jhye did an incredible job to get back to play that Test. We probably saw that he could function in a team with four quicks. He's still got a little bit of work to do, I think, just to get back to top ball speed and that intensity of being able to be in an attack with three quicks. But hopefully that'll build over time,” said George Bailey. Jhye Richardson was included in the contracted list for the last two seasons even though he played only a handful of matches due to injury concerns. But he fought his way back into the side in December, as he played Test cricket for the first time in four years. He still seems to be far from his best in terms of his bowling speed and accuracy, so this break could give him enough time to get back on track.
Injury Concerns Around Lyon Open Door for Todd Murphy’s Inclusion
"A pretty significant hamstring tendon injury to a 38-year-old, probably there's a higher degree, or a sense of realism that it may not ever get back to the upper echelon of where you need it to; So what does that look like? It may mean there's not necessarily the capacity to play big blocks of games, and you may have to look at that. So I think it's just being a little bit aware that that's a possibility.” Bailey said. Nathan Lyon has been Australia’s best red-ball spinner for quite a long time now, but his rhythm seems to be disrupted with injury concerns. Taking into consideration the doubt around his availability, Todd Murphy has been included in the side to give that extra flexibility in the spin bowling department.

Sam Konstas Remains Key to Australia’s Future Plans
"Nothing's really changed in terms of the fact that he is on a journey," Bailey said. "I think we can take some positives out of the fact that he was getting consistent starts across those Shield games. Would he have liked to have gone on and scored some big runs out of that? No doubt, he remains a player that we're incredibly interested in. We've got an Australia A trip to India later in the year. I imagine, as it stands at the moment, he is a strong chance to be a part of that,” said George Bailey on Sam Konstas. Sam Konstas has been a fine player for Australia as she adds a lot of power to Australia’s batting unit, and he had a terrific season in the Sheffield Shield Cricket as he was the 5th highest run-scorer in the league with 660 runs. Bailey hinted that he could be included in the trip to India for Australia A and that he is still a player who is part of Australia’s long-term plan.
