Netizens flooded X with memes as Lucknow Super Giants skipper Rishabh Pant stepped down from captaincy. The franchise took to confirm the news stating that Pant requested the franchise to give up the role and has been accepted. The decision came after the Super Giants suffered a horrible campaign in IPL 2026 season and finished at the bottom of the standings. They could manage to win only four of their 14 games and became the first team to get knocked out of the playoffs race.

On Friday, May 29, LSG took to their social media to make the official announcement and said, “Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) wish to formally announce that Rishabh Pant has requested to be relieved of his captaincy duties with the franchise, and the franchisee has accepted his request with immediate effect,” the team announced.

In addition to it, LSG Director of Cricket, Tom Moody said, "Rishabh approached the franchisee with this request and we have respectfully accepted it. These decisions are never easy. We are grateful for everything Rishabh has brought to this dressing room as captain. Our focus now is on the collective - rebuilding and restructuring to reach the best standards.”

The news of Pant stepping down as the captain of the team after two seasons spread on the internet as wildfire. While some fans welcomed the idea, suggesting that the wicketkeeper-batter would now be able to focus on his individual performance, slammed LSG owner Dr. Sanjiv Goenka for allegedly sacking Pant from the helm.
