Indian star middle-order batter Tilak Varma stated that he isn’t thinking about the competition over his spot in the side and that his only comparison is with himself. He stated that he focuses on how to improve himself and his game day after day rather than being worried about external things. The competition to get into the Indian squad is increasing with every passing day and even the slightest dip in form could result in a player losing out on his spot. However, Tilak Varma doesn’t seem to be the slightest bit bothered about the comparisons or the competition that he has over his spot in the national side.

“I don’t really look at the competition. I don’t think about who’s coming in or who’s doing what. For me, it only matters how good I am today and how good I can be tomorrow. That’s the comparison I make every day,” said Tilak Varma in a conversation with Sportstar. He was asked regarding how he keeps improving his game despite the growing competition to get into the Indian squad. The statement is affirmative of the positive attitude shown by the India A skipper and he has been one of the finest batters recently in India’s white-ball setup.

India A captain continues to impress in Tri-series

Tilak Varma has been one of the growing talents in Indian cricket and his performance for the national side has been exceptionally good. One of his most remarkable performances came in the Finals of the 2024 Asia Cup against Pakistan, when he single-handedly anchored the run chase for India. The Mumbai Indians batter has been appointed as the vice-captain of the T20I side and this marks a new beginning in unravelling the captain in Tilak Varma. He is an experienced player himself playing for India and the Mumbai Indians in the IPL and he’s capable of handling the pressure at the big stage. Tilak Varma was handed over the captaincy of the India A side in the Tri-series alongside Afghanistan and Sri Lanka as well.

“That’s the comparison I make every day. I focus on improving my game, on and off the field. If I compare myself with anyone, it’s with myself. That’s the only thing that matters," added Tilak Varma on the talks regarding comparison with other players and on improving himself according to the evolving nature of the game.

Tilak Varma has led the India A side to the Finals of the tri-series and it will be an interesting clash against Sri Lanka A. The Mumbai Indians batter will be keen on assisting Shreyas Iyer, a player who has been absent from the T20I format for quite some time. Tilak Varma has proven his caliber as the captain of the side with his tactical brilliance for the India A side. He could even potentially be groomed as India’s next white-ball captain considering his ability with the bat and his composure in pressure situations. Tilak Varma will be looking to step up his game to fit perfectly into the role that India could hand over to him in the coming years of his cricketing career.
