
On this day, June 9, 2024: India beat arch rivals Pakistan by six runs in 2024 WT20. It was the 19th match of the 2024 T20 World Cup played between India and Pakistan. This match was being played at New York and India were batting first. The surface was very tough for batting and Pakistan pacers found plenty of movement with the new ball. Virat Kohli was the first to be dismissed as India were under early pressure. Rohit Sharma also fell cheaply in the third over and India were 19/2. Axar Patel was promoted up the order and along with Rishabh Pant consolidated the innings.
Axar Patel and Rishabh Pant put up a good partnership and Axar lost his wicket for 20 as India were reduced to 58/3. Rishabh Pant looked in great touch and smashed 42 runs as India kept up with the rate. India suffered a massive collapse in the second half of the innings as they went from 89/3 to 96/7 in a matter of a few overs.
Haris Rauf was excellent in the middle overs and Pakistan pacers were clinical in the death overs as India were bowled out for 119 in just 19 overs. It was a below par total and a solid comeback by Pakistan. Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah picked up three wickets each and at the halfway mark of the innings Pakistan were favorites.
Bumrah stars as India stage a comeback
Chasing the target, Pakistan openers got off to a quick start and went to 26 before Babar Azam lost his wicket. Usman Khan played a few shots but departed soon after as Pakistan were 57/2. Fakhar Zaman and Rizwan were going along well and Pakistan needed almost run a ball in the last eight overs with eight wickets in hand.
Indian bowlers completely pulled back things and kept putting the pressure by bowling tight overs. The run rate was climbing up and Jasprit Bumrah delivered an excellent spell picking up three wickets as Pakistan were restricted to 113/7 and lost the match by six runs. It was a remarkable comeback from India and Bumrah was the player of the match. Other bowlers chipped in well and it was an excellent effort.
