The Indian Premier League 2023 mini auction is drawing
closer as the day progresses. The event is slated to take place on December 23
in Kochi, and enough excitement has been built up around an important day for
the cash rich T20 league. A total of 405 players have been shortlisted for the
mini auction.
Only 87 spots need to be filled by the franchises, with 30
of them being from overseas players quota. After the 86th player, the
auction will have an accelerated process, and the franchises need to submit their
choice of players. As a result, intense competition will be witnessed among the
franchises. Thereafter, there will be some players, who might miss the train due to
limited spots.
1. Ishant Sharma
The experienced Indian pacer has been out of favour in the
Indian white-ball side. In fact, his injury concerns and lack of wicket-taking
form has resulted in him getting dropped out from the Test team as well. Ishant
went unsold in the 2022 edition, while featuring in a handful of matches in the
2020 and 2019 editions.
Moreover, the 34-year-old has played in limited domestic
matches, which further sheds light on his fitness. With 117 wickets in 145 games,
Ishant has been an average performer in the shortest format and is not likely
to fetch an IPL contract.

2. Joe Root
Joe Root, the most consistent run-scorer for the English
team in red-ball cricket in the last few years has decided to ply his trade in the
IPL auction. The former captain feels playing in IPL would help him prepare for
the 2023 World Cup, which will be held in India.
However, Root last featured in a T20I match in 2019 and is
not a regular member of the ODI side as well. With his game not suited enough
for white-ball cricket, the 31-year-old might not find a buyer.

3. Odean Smith
The Windies all-rounder has been inconsistent in the T20
format. Although he possesses terrific ball-striking abilities, he often fails
to execute well with the ball. In the IPL 2022, he picked six wickets at an
expensive economy of 11.87 and could score only 51 runs in six games at an average
of 17.
Further, Smith could not weave his magic in the T20 World
Cup 2022, while picking only two wickets in three games. With much competition
with many all-rounders, the 26-year-old could fall short of securing an IPL
contract.

4. Rassie Van der Dussen
With a solid technique and all-format proficiency, Rassie
has cemented his place in the South African team. He holds an average of 69.31 in
the ODIs and 36 in T20Is, which depicts his strong track record in international
cricket.
However, Rassie could not do much damage to the opposition
in IPL 2022. He could score only 22 runs in three outings at a paltry average
of 11. Also, he could not prove his merit in the T20 WC 2022, due to injury
concerns.

5. Tom Latham
With an ability to play big innings under pressure, Tom
Latham has proved himself in the Test as well as ODIs. The focus of his career
has never been T20s, which is evident from his number of appearances as well.
Latham last featured for the New Zealand T20I side in September
2021 and has garnered 322 runs in 15 innings. The southpaw’s CV in T20s is not
good enough, which might not excite the franchises to raise the paddle for him.
