The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed the wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das as the new ODI captain. BCB President Tamim Iqbal announced the decision during the board of directors meeting in Mirpur. The 31-year-old Das will lead Bangladesh in the shortest format, while he remains as the T20I skipper.

The BCB has initiated the planning for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, and it has made a decision to change the captaincy. The new ODI captain will lead the team in the white-ball matches, whereas, Najmul Hossain Shanto will continue to lead the side in Tests. Mehidy Hasan Miraz was the previous ODI captain, who led the team for a little over a year. The spin-bowling all-rounder will now be solely focused on his batting and bowling. The decision was made after the team had a poor series in Zimbabwe, where they lost 2-1 to the hosts.

Mehidy’s position as the ODI captain has been given to Towhid Hridoy, while he is also expected to continue to play as the middle-order batter. However, he has been named the white-ball vice-captain as the BCB wants to ensure the next generation of Bangladesh’s leadership.

Bangladesh government forms committee to probe 2026 T20 World Cup withdrawal

The Bangladesh government has formed a three-member committee to investigate the controversial decision of the national cricket team to pull out of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India. The committee will look into the circumstances surrounding the decision and the actions taken by the Bangladesh Cricket Board. It will also report on the errors of judgment by the BCB in the entire affair.

The cricket team’s decision to withdraw from the T20 World Cup, which featured a 20-nation, was made by the previous government. The decision was prompted by security concerns following the release of pace bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL. The decision was not well-received by the ICC, and they refused to allow the BCB to play their group fixtures in Sri Lanka instead. The T20 World Cup 2026 has already been replaced by Scotland.

The new committee is led by Additional Secretary Dr. AKM Wali Ullah, and it also consists of former captain Habibul Bashar and Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Faisal Dastagir. It will submit its report within the next 15 working days. The entire affair has led to a significant backlash from the international cricket community, as well as a loss of 240 crore rupees for the local board. The investigation is part of the new government’s efforts to restore the image of the BCB and cricket in general.
