Delhi Capitals fast bowler Lungi Ngidi suffered a severe head injury while attempting a catch during the clash against IPL 2026. The Capitals hosted the Punjab Kings in the 35th league-stage game of the season at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. The game saw the Capitals batting first, and putting up a mammoth total of 264 runs with the loss of 2 wickets. Delhi batter KL Rahul scripted history, and became the first batter to score over 150 runs in the IPL.

After dominating the home ground in the first innings, the Capitals aimed to continue their momentum in the second. However, things took a horrific turn when their fast bowler Lungi Ngidi suffered a head injury. On the third ball of the third over, the South African player attempted a Priyansh Arya catch. However, while doing so, he landed on his back, and suffered a nasty fall on his head. While it was expected to be a non-serious injury at first, Ngidi stayed on the field before the medical staff approached him.

Ngidi looked to be responding to the doctor, but it didn’t look good at all. He was then taken to the hospital for the scans and critical concussion precautions in an ambulance. The entire incident left fans and his teammates worried, leading to a delay in the game due to the same.

Dushmantha Chameera replaces Lungi Ngidi for a while, leaves later

Just when the medical staff was assisting Ngidi, Dushmantha Chameera got ready to replace the Proteas cricketer on the ground. He then walked out on the field as a substitute and positioned himself at where Ngidi was standing. However, the Sri Lankan left the field after the completion of the over, and Vipraj Nigam was in the field for some time.

Coming back to Ngidi, while fans and pundits wish for Ngidi to get better soon, things don’t look good for the Delhi-based franchise. A couple of days ago, a video from the Arun Jaitley Stadium went viral where a young player got struck on his face by the ball, and was taken away in the ambulance. Not only this, but the team also lost Ben Duckett, when he opted out of the IPL 2026 season due to injury concerns. Mitchell Starc is also yet to play his first game of the season due to a shoulder injury. All of this, and now Ngidi’s injury has seemingly put the side in a tough spot for the season.
