Former Australia cricketer Mark Waugh made a blunt statement directed at Alastair Cook stating that he was the most boring batter that he has ever seen. “"I couldn't watch him bat, he's the most boring batsman I have ever seen", stated Mark Waugh. This is not the first time that Waugh has made a comment on Cook and this one was probably the most critical one of them all. There has been a debate that has been on the rise with regards to the flair of the game and the classic essence of the game. Waugh backed the flair that the batters have and stated that in comparison to the modern approach of the game, Alastair Cook’s approach was the most boring of all.
Cook’s legacy in Test cricket remains untouchable despite Waugh’s criticism
Alastair Cook has been one of the most prolific batters that England has ever produced in Test cricket and even during his retirement, England referred to him as chef. He has accumulated a significant amount of runs for his nation and he is still celebrated by the English fans. Steve Waugh on the contrary has blamed him in the past when he backed his players after their loss away from home to India. Cook stated that the players were not robots and the Australian couldn’t just believe what he had heard. He stated that world-class players are expected to play anywhere in the world and not just in favourable conditions.
It is beyond doubt that the modern cricket game is obsessed with power-hitting leaving very little role for the bowlers. But at the same time, it is indeed important to preserve the purity of Test cricket. Playing Test cricket is in itself an achievement as you need to have patience and perseverance to last throughout the gruelling 5 days. The statement made by Steve Waugh seems to be more of a statement that comes from hatred rather than positive criticism. Alastair Cook was already thrown under the bus a couple of weeks back when Kevin Pietersen hit back at him for advising Jacob Bethell against staying in the IPL.
