The 2026 IPL turned the tables around. While openers dominated the Orange Cap battle and the limelight for many seasons in the past, this particular season belonged to the middle order. The most significant influence was provided by batters entering the crease at positions three and four before transforming the pressure into domination. Heinrich Klaasen, Shreyas Iyer, Cooper Connolly, and Rajat Patidar served as engines for their respective sides. They batted quickly, dealt with collapses, and completed games. However, what made them stand out was that they contributed greatly to their sides' victories even in the closest of battles. In summary, the IPL 2026 season will be remembered as the one where middle order king batsmen dominated the tournament.

It all showed in their stats. Klaasen scored more than 600 runs with ruthless consistency. Iyer played an aggressive game for Punjab Kings while maintaining control. Connolly emerged as a young phenomenon of the season. On the other hand, Patidar transformed the match with his short bursts of play for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Heinrich Klaasen

Klaasen was the most comprehensive mid-order performer in IPL 2026. Opening the batting for the Sunrisers Hyderabad from number four, he racked up 606 runs in 14 innings at an average of 50.50 and a strike rate of 159.47. This is the first time that anyone has ever made more than 600 runs as a mid-order batsman in the IPL. He also delivered when it mattered.

In the game against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium, his unbeaten 65 from 30 balls helped his team chase down 244 runs. In a game that decided whether SRH could qualify for playoffs against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, he scored 51 from 24 balls and helped his team make 255/4. Klaasen also hurt Chennai Super Kings twice, scoring 59 and 47 in two separate wins. His unbeaten 37 off 13 against Delhi Capitals showed his finishing range at its sharpest.

Shreyas Iyer

Even though Punjab Kings missed the playoffs, Iyer kept them alive deep into the league stage. The PBKS captain scored 498 runs at a remarkable average of 55.33 and a strike rate touching 169. He also registered one century and five fifties. His best knock came in a must-win game against Lucknow Super Giants.

Walking in with Punjab struggling at 22/2, Iyer hammered an unbeaten 101 off 51 balls and snapped the team’s six-match losing streak. Earlier, he blasted 71 not out off 36 against Delhi Capitals and crushed SRH with a 69 off 33 balls. At Wankhede, his quick 66 against Mumbai Indians kept Punjab in control during a difficult chase. Iyer’s season stood out for timing and composure under pressure.

Cooper Connolly

Connolly turned out to be one of the biggest revelations in the IPL 2026 edition. In this particular season, the 22-year-old batter contributed 491 runs for Punjab Kings at a strike rate of more than 163 by batting predominantly at number 3 and number 4 positions. Connolly had opened his IPL account with a sensational unbeaten knock of 72 against Gujarat Titans on his debut appearance.

But what marked him as an outstanding cricketer was a fantastic knock of 107* runs from just 59 deliveries against Sunrisers Hyderabad chasing a massive target of 236. He had also hit an 87-run knock from just 46 deliveries against Lucknow Super Giants and added late acceleration against Rajasthan Royals with a rapid 30 off 14.

Rajat Patidar

Patidar gave Royal Challengers Bengaluru what they required most from their middle overs in terms of pace. He scored 393 runs with an excellent strike rate of 183.64, which was enough for him to be crowned the most damaging spin hitter of the league.

Among his greatest performances was when he hit an amazing fifty off just 17 deliveries, equaling the longest running captaincy streak in the IPL league history. Against Chennai Super Kings, he remained unbeaten on 48 runs off 19 deliveries, contributing largely to RCB achieving a score of 250/3. Patidar proved to be very effective against SRH by scoring 56 runs and ensuring that RCB clinched a top two position.
