Some remark, “A fitting honour for the great of the game!” “A great honour for the great of the game,” others share. “A highly prestigious honour for a giant talent of the sport,” many are exclaiming. There are multiple kind and comforting expressions that describe the great privilege it is to see Rohit Sharma being extended the amazing civilian honour called Padma Shree. But all lead to one sentiment and echo the same gladness that there is with such a feat and it’s the absolute satisfaction it takes to see Rohit Sharma getting the honour he truly deserves.

Earlier yesterday, a few hours ago, one of the most richly talented and hugely admired cricketer from India was conferred the distinct honour in the form of Padma Shree by the president Draupadi Murmu! The ceremony, as per usual, taking place at the capital-based Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.

The 38-year-old hugely experienced right handed batter has rightfully earned the nickname, “The Hitman,” renowned for his ability to hit attacking shots and that trademark six that he often scores out of beautifully executed pull strokes. Moreover, Rohit Sharma also sports a successful cricketing resume that has roaring successes- both as batter and captain. The former captain of the Indian national team got the honour of leading the side in Test and One day formats, and later, even T20Is!

It was under his immensely valuable leadership that Team India won the T20 World Cup that took place in the Caribbean in 2024, and the Champion’s trophy 2025 in the one day format and previously, even made it to the final of the 2023 one day World Cup at home in India.

But the real impact that the man with no fewer than 511 games for India has been able to create is his exceptional talent with the bat. That rare ability to combine a sense of elegance to hitting. You know the rare joy of seeing destructive batting that feels a bit like melody to the ears and a performance art to the eyes! Back in 2019, Rohit Sharma struck 5 centuries in the World Cup.

Now, after over a decade in the ardent and consummate service of Indian Cricket where he has come to strike nearly 20,000 runs, Rohit Sharma, now part of the side purely as player, and that too only in 50-over format, isn’t done yet. Not just yet.

He eyes the grand success in the form of the 2027 one day World Cup and will be part of India’s team squad. Let’s hope greater successes come to him so that he can continue to score for the team and in the process, inspire a countless lives!
