Senegal is facing a tough blow just before their crucial FIFA World Cup 2026 Group I showdown against Iraq, as their star goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has been sidelined due to injury. The 34-year-old, who is one of Africa’s top goalkeepers and a vital part of Senegal’s recent achievements, suffered a left knee injury during the team’s 3-2 loss to Norway. He had to leave the game in the second half after showing signs of discomfort and was replaced by Mory Diaw. The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) later announced that medical tests have confirmed he won’t be able to play in the match against Iraq.

They stated that "The Senegalese Football Federation inform the public that goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has sustained an injury to his left knee during the match between Senegal and Norway on Monday.”

Mendy’s absence comes at a crucial time for Senegal. The African champions are heading into their last Group I match without any points from their first two games and need a win against Iraq to keep their dreams alive. Even if they manage to secure a victory, they’ll also need some favorable outcomes in other matches and a better goal difference to advance to the knockout stage.

Erling Haaland Strikes Twice, as Norway Defeat Senegal by 3-2

Senegal found themselves in a tough spot after their loss to Norway, who clinched a spot in the round of 32 with a 3-2 win. The West African team held their ground for a good part of the match but ultimately fell victim to some costly defensive mistakes. Just before halftime, captain Kalidou Koulibaly mishandled a tricky situation, giving Marcus Pedersen the chance to score. Earlier, Pedersen had made a cut-back that Norway couldn't convert, but the pressure was relentless. Moments before the break, he found space on the right, teamed up with captain Martin Odegaard, and took advantage of a defensive slip to put Norway ahead.

After the break, Norway took charge. Just three minutes into the second half, Odegaard delivered a pinpoint pass through the Senegal defense to Erling Haaland, who finished with precision to extend the lead. Senegal tried to fight back with Ismaila Sarr's effort, but Haaland struck again shortly after, capitalizing on Norway's high press. With his brace, the Manchester City striker brought his World Cup goal tally to four in just two matches, helping Norway become the first team in the group to secure a spot in the last 32.

Sarr added a second goal deep into stoppage time, but it was not enough. Senegal now sit bottom of Group I on zero points with a goal difference of minus three. They must defeat Iraq in Toronto and hope other results work in their favour to avoid an early exit from the tournament.
