Shubman Gill went past another major milestone in his Test career on Sunday when he completed 3,000 runs during the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo. The India captain walked into the match needing just seven runs after falling short in Galle. He reached the milestone in the 23rd over of the first session with an outside edge that raced to the boundary. At lunch India were 88 for 2, with Gill unbeaten on 13 along with Padikkal. In 43 Test matches, Gill now has 3004 runs at an average of 43.53. His tally includes 11 centuries and eight fifties, with a highest score of 269 and a strike rate of around 62.

This is a big achievement after he made his debut against Australia in Melbourne in December 2020. The numbers as captain stand out even more for Gill. Since taking over leadership duties, he has scored 1111 runs in 18 innings at a remarkable average of 74.06. Six of those innings have been centuries. Over the last 18 months the conversion rate has been good and the average has improved, and the big scores have become more frequent. Reaching 3,000 runs at this stage of his career is a big milestone he has achieved in the longest format.

Shubman Gill Becomes Fourth-Youngest Indian to 3,000 Test Runs

Shubman Gill has broken yet another record by becoming the fourth-youngest batter from the country to score 3,000 Test runs. He reached the mark at 26 years and 349 days during the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo. Only three Indians got to this milestone younger than him. Sachin Tendulkar remains at the top completing the feat at just 23 years and 228 days. Virender Sehwag followed at 26 years and 157 days, while Dilip Vengsarkar did so at 26 years and 263 days. Gill slipped in just ahead of Kapil Dev, who was 26 years and 356 days old when he crossed the landmark which is a gap of only seven days.

-26d 263d - Dilip Vengsarkar

-26y 349d - Shubman Gill

The list is short and exclusive and reaching 3,000 Test runs before the age of 27 has always been a rare achievement in Indian cricket. Gill joins an elite list of players. The Indian captain went on to smash a half century against Sri Lanka on the first day of the second Test. However immediately after reaching his fifty he lost his wicket to Asitha Fernando. India will be keen to build on this platform and look for a big score as they push to finish this series on a winning note
