The Wankhede Stadium hosted a big ceremony for former Indian cricketer Ravi Shastri, as he will have a stand named after him at the iconic venue. However, the ceremony also saw Surya Kumar Yadav felicitated. Even Sunil Gavaskar graced the ceremony.
Under Surya Kumar Yadav’s captaincy, India won the third T20 World Cup 2026. India easily won a one-sided final against New Zealand, leading to their consecutive T20 World Cup wins. Although SKY’s form was a major concern in the whole tournament, people praised his captaincy and the win. He was felicitated by the Maharashtra CM for his contributions in the tournament.
Surya Kumar Yadav plays in the IPL 2026 season for the Mumbai Indians (MI), serving as a key batsman and occasionally leading the side as a stand-in captain. Retained for ₹16.35 Cr, he entered the tournament fresh off leading India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title. He also once played for the Kolkata Knight Riders.
MCA to honour Ravi Shastri and Other Veterans
The decision, approved by the MCA Apex Council on February 27, honoured the contributions of Ravi Shastri, Dilip Sardesai, Eknath Solkar, and Diana Edulji to Mumbai and Indian cricket. As part of the initiative, the Level 1 stand below the Press Box will be named after Shastri, recognising his multifaceted contribution to the game as a player, captain, coach, and commentator. Gates no. 3,5 and 6 are unveiled as Diana Edulji Gate, Dilip Sardesai Gate and Eknath Solankar Gate, respectively.
MCA president Ajinkya Naik said, “This ceremony marks a proud moment for Mumbai cricket as we come together on 9th April to honour these iconic figures. The unveiling of the Ravi Shastri Stand, along with the dedication of stadium gates to Dilip Sardesai, Eknath Solkar and Diana Edulji, reflects our deep respect for their invaluable contributions. We look forward to celebrating their legacy at Wankhede Stadium while inspiring future generations to uphold the same values and strive for greatness.”
