Veteran Journalist Rajdeep Sardesai has made a huge revelation stating that former cricketer and Head of the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) VVS Laxman is being groomed for a big responsibility in Indian cricket. Recently, the Indian cricket fraternity has found itself in hot waters with successive losses in Tests and overseas tours, along with ill management of injuries. Amidst all the chaos that the Indian cricket is going through, multiple reports have suggested that the jobs of Head Coach Gautam Gambhir and Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar are in danger.
As per reports, Agarkar is unlikely to receive another extension from the BCCI after his tenure ends, and he is likely to be replaced by VVS Laxman. Recently, Laxman squashed the rumours of him taking up the job of Head Coach of the men’s senior team. And now, veteran journalist Rajdeep Sardesai has claimed that he is being groomed for a big assignment in the Indian cricketing scenario.
In one of his recent interviews, Sardesai said, “Told by one of my parliamentary reporters that be prepared for VVS Laxman getting a very big assignment in Indian cricket in September. This is what the buzz is that he is the Head of the Centre of Excellence but now he is being groomed for a big task of Indian Cricket.”
He added, “I don’t know what it is. Is it Chairman of selectors or white ball coach? Lots of speculation but this is what someone in the know told one of our reports the other day in Parliament that VVS Laxman is going to get a very very important assignment come September.”
Things Took U-Turn for Ajit Agarkar Following Rohit Sharma Controversy
Agarkar’s tenure had ended in June this year, but he was given an extension for three months. Not only this, but at a point it seemed like the former cricketer would continue till the 2027 ODI World Cup considering his solid bonds with Indian management and head coach Gambhir. However, the recent retirement rumours of Rohit Sharma during the England tour last month gave things an unexpected turn, and now Agarkar faces an uncertain future with the management.
For the unversed, several reports claimed that Rohit Sharma was set to play his last India game during the third ODI at the Lord’s. However, the rumours were soon put to rest by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, who without consulting the chief selector, stated that Sharma would continue to play as long as he remained part of the team’s plans. The former skipper’s century further complicated the matters instead of resolving them, as a report by Dainik Jagran suggested.
It further added, “BCCI officials believe that Laxman's views would command greater respect and that senior players such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli would be more receptive to him.” The final decision will now be taken during the BCCI’s AGM in September.
