According to sports journalist Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City is ready to keep its door open for Manuel Akanji, as Galatasaray is showing keen interest in buying the player. Discussions are already underway for the possible signing of a centre-back player and bringing the Swiss defender to Istanbul. The 30-year-old has been an important member of Pep Guardiola’s team since joining Borussia Dortmund in 2022 and still has two years remaining on his deal. Galatasaray are keen to sign the deal with the player ahead of the Turkish Super Lig transfer deadline on September 12. Ideally, they hope to complete the signings before September 2 to register the players for their Champions League squad.
The transfer highlights the club’s ambition to bring in experienced players who can provide leadership during a demanding season. The 30-year-old defender moved to Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund in 2022 for €17 million. Since then, he has established himself as a dependable choice under Pep Guardiola. Akanji has enjoyed significant success with City, winning two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.
Coach Okan Buruk is looking for a versatile defender for the club
According to ESPN, Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk is eager to bring in a defender capable of covering both centre-back and right-back roles. Centre-back, Akanji even started the 2023 Champions League final at right-back under Guardiola. Sources also revealed to ESPN that Galatasaray holds an interest in City goalkeeper Ederson. Although City would prefer to keep the Brazilian, they are prepared to let him go if he expresses a desire to leave. Meanwhile, the defender is yet to decide his future with the club.
Since the time Akanji joined Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, Akanji has played 136 matches, with 5 goals and 3 assists. However, he was left out of the match against Wolverhampton for the Premier League match squad.
