Punjab captain Abhishek Sharma entered his name in history books as he hit a terrific century in just 28 balls in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25 match. Sharma came up with the explosive knock in the Group A clash against Meghalaya in Rajkot on Thursday, December 5. With this, he levelled the record created by Urvil Patel of Gujarat to become the joint-holder of the fastest T20 hundred scored by an Indian. This was Abhishek’s fourth SMAT hundred, which is the most for any batter in the history of the elite domestic tournament.

Punjab were chasing 143 runs target set by Meghalaya, and while the side had already lost a couple of wickets in the powerplay, Sharma took steering in hands and guided the side to a smooth win. The batter had reached his half-century in only 14 deliveries, before leading Punjab to a comfortable seven-wicket win with more than 10 overs to spare.

Abhishek Sharma breaks Suryakumar Yadav’s record for most T20 sixes by Indian batter

The knock saw Sharma slamming a total of 11 maximums as Punjab chased down the target only in 9.3 overs for seven wickets to spare. With this, he also broke the record set by Suryakumar Yadav for most sixes by an Indian in a calendar year. Suryakumar had smashed 85 sixes in 41 innings in 2022, and Sharma surpassed it by taking the tally to 86 sixes in only 38 innings this year.

Moreover, as Abhishek and Urvil now hold the record of joint-fastest T20 century by Indian batters, the record for the fastest ton in T20 cricket belongs to Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan, who reached the three-figure mark in just 27 balls against Cyprus.
