On September 24, Sunday, the day one of chess at the Asian Games 2023, Team India registered mixed results in the men’s and women’s individual events in Hangzhou. Vidit Gujrathi, the third seeded Indian grandmaster lost his second round match to Kazybek Nogerbek in the men’s rapid, the Kazakhstan international master, while Koneru Humpy, the Indian grandmaster, secured two consecutive wins in the women’s rapid.

The round one of the men’s individual event saw Vidit Gujarathi defeat Mohammad Fahad Rahman, the Bangladesh international master (IM). His fellow countryman Arjun Erigaisi won against the international master (IM) Paulo Bersamina of the Philippines.
Koneru Humpy got the better of Mobina Alinasabalamdari, the Iranian women's grandmaster (WGM) in round one, before she brushed aside the international master (IM) Le Thao Nguyen Pham of Vietnam. In her opening match of the women’s chess event, the Indian grandmaster Harika Dronavalli won comfortably against the women’s candidate master (WCM) Rouda Alali of UAE and then, she got the victory against the women’s grandmaster (WGM) Qianyun Gong of Singapore.
Meanwhile, the round two of the men’s individual event was winless for Team India after Arjun Erigaisi could only manage a draw against the Vietnamese grandmaster Le Tuan Minh. Also, Vidit Gujrathi suffered a shocking loss against the Kazakhstani opponent too.
