On Tuesday, April 15, Aston Villa were quite close to forcing extra-time in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) quarter-finals against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at the Villa Park, but they fell short on the comeback trail, losing 5-4 on aggregate. After suffering a 3-1 defeat at Parc des Princes in the first leg of the UCL quarter-finals, Aston Villa clinched the second leg 3-2 versus PSG at home, but it wasn’t enough for them to make the final four of the coveted competition this season.

The first half for Aston Villa began poorly in the second leg of the UCL, going down by two goals within the first half hour, starting with the goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez’s mistake, allowing Achraf Hakimi to open the scoring for PSG in the 11th minute. Nuno Mendes gave a 2-0 lead to the visitors in the 27th minute, putting Aston Villa firmly on the backfoot, needing four goals to force the extra-time.

Villa Park went into a frenzy as Aston Villa went 3-2 ahead on the night with two goals in two minutes, firstly from John McGinn’s strike from 20 yards out in the 55th minute, followed by Erzi Konsa from defence scoring the third goal for them.

PSG likely to face Arsenal in UEFA Champions League semi-finals

But then, PSG defence regained their composure at the critical time of the match, not allowing the Aston Villa attackers to put the ball in the back of the net. The 3-2 defeat on the night was enough for the French club to make it through to the semi-finals of the UCL, where they will be playing Arsenal in all likelihood, especially with the English club securing a massive lead from the first leg of the quarter-finals against Real Madrid.
