Star Indian batter Rohit Sharma recently announced retirement from Test cricket after calling off his time upon the shortest format after Team India’s T20 World Cup triumph last year. Despite retiring from two formats of the game, he continues to play the 50-over format after leading the team to title win in March in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
The 38-year-old right-handed batter took to his Instagram story to announce his decision which said, “Hello everyone I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.”
BCCI expected Rohit Sharma to retire from ODIs after Champions trophy 2025: Reports
However, Rohit Sharma’s decision to step away from the longest format didn’t come as a surprise seeing his performance in the last few matches, a shocking report has now come to the front which stated that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was expecting his international retirement. “Quite frankly, a lot of us thought Rohit wanted to move away from the ODI format after winning the Champions Trophy. There have been no discussions between Rohit and the selectors over his ODI future," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
However, key members of the board has hinted on Rohit Sharma’s participation in the ODI World Cup, which is scheduled to be played in 2027, but the recent reports hint other story as it claims that there have not been any discussions between the 38-year-old and the Chief Selector, Ajit Agarkar. This comes contrary to what Rohit Sharma had stated to continue in this format.
"Right now, I am taking things as they come. It wouldn’t be fair for me to think too far ahead. At this moment, my focus is on playing well and maintaining the right mindset. I don’t want to draw any lines and say whether I will or won’t play in the 2027 World Cup. There’s no point in making such statements right now,” Rohit Sharma had said after India's title win in Dubai. With around 27 matches set to be played until the ODI World Cup in 2027, it has to be seen if Rohit Sharma will continue in the format.
