Australia opener Travis Head has delivered a fierce start to his team in the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025 clash against Afghanistan at the Gaddafi Stadium. Batting first after winning the toss, the Afghan team put up a competitive total of 273 runs on the board riding on the batting efforts of Sediqullah Atal (85 off 95) and Azmatullah Omarzai (67 off 63). Spencer Johnson spearheaded Australia’s pace attack from the front and gave a tough time to the Afghan side. The pacer recorded 2/49 figures in his 10 overs. Adam Zampa also displayed his experience and racked 2/48 figures in his eight-over spell.

Chasing the target, the Aussies have got an exceptional start from their openers Travis Head and Matthew Short. Both batted aggressively and took Afghanistan’s bowling unit to the cleaners. Short fell against Omarzai after scoring 20 off 15, but Head didn’t relent and kept on dominating bowlers. His brilliant effort helped the Aussies reach their first fifty within five overs. The southpaw brought his fifty in just 34 balls and handed momentum to his side. Rain intervention halts the game between Afghanistan and Australia

Australia have looked magnificent in this chase thus far as they are cruising toward the target comfortably. The Men in Yellow completed their first 100 runs in just 12 overs. However, heavy rain in Lahore has discontinued the game and both sides are currently in their dugouts. As of this writing, the two-time title winners have notched up 109/1 in just 12.5 overs. Head is at the crease with his unbeaten 59 off 40, while captain Steven Smith has amassed unbeaten 19 off 22.

If Afghanistan fails to defend their score, Australia and South Africa will advance to the semi-finals from Group B, and this will be case if the match gets rained out. South Africa, who are the table-toppers currently, will look to beat England in the game to be played in Karachi on Saturday, March 1, and conclude their group stage in top spot.
