Former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu has pulled out of the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year after suffering an unexpected injury. The Canadian is said to have suffered a stress fracture in her back which led to the decision to pull out of the US Open 2023.

Notably, Andreescu won the tournament in 2019 and lost her opening match at the Citi Open in Washington DC last month before going down to Camila Giorgi at the Canadian Open. In her match at the Canadian Open, Andreescu was checked by a physiotherapist as she felt some discomfort, later withdrawing from Cincinnati Masters.

The 23-year-old, who was in attendance at the US Open 2023 Kids Day, was scheduled to face Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine in the opening round and will now be replaced by a qualifier.

Paula Badosa also ends 2023 season with injury

Additionally, former World No. 2 Paula Badosa also announced her withdrawal from the US Open 2023. The 25-year-old, who was set to face Venus Williams in the first round, took to social media to announce her decision.

“I wanted to update you on my situation with the injury…. After struggling for many months to compete again, I am ending my season”, she started. “Those of you who know me know how much I like to compete and how difficult it has been to make this decision. We have tried everything together with my team but the pain is not letting me move forward. Thanks to the people who are still by my side in these hard times. See you next year, stronger than ever,” she further added.

The 25-year-old Spaniard will also be replaced by a qualifier for the final Grand Slam.
