The Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians registered their first win in the 2023 Indian Premier League after defeating Delhi Capitals in an exciting game earlier this week. Setting a target of 173 for their guests to chase, Delhi was quite fast to take Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Rohit Sharma down in quick succession in the 16th over of the match. Mumbai was short of two runs on the final ball when Tim David was clever enough to play a grounded shot and took a double to take victory home.

Things weren’t easy for the Mumbai team as they faced a setback in the first innings, as Suryakumar Yadav suffered an injury right above his eye. However, post-injury, something happened that made MI’s head coach Mark Boucher appreciate him for his bravery.

Post-match, MI coach Boucher revealed that despite being injured, Suryakumar Yadav insisted on batting at number 4 when their side went out for bat. Yadav has been batting at number four since their seasonal opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore. “He did get hit on the field, he came in, and his eye was starting to swell. He had to ice it. I came in thinking, maybe we move him down in the order. He meets me in the bathroom and says, 'Coach, actually I want to bat 4'. For me, that's not shying away from anything,” Boucher said while addressing the Mumbai team post their win.

“These are the type of characters you want in the dressing room. When the times are tough, they're not scared to hide in the back of the changing room. They want to go out there. So, well done,” he further added.

Suryakumar injured himself while trying to catch the ball hit by Axar Patel at long-off in the 17th over. The ball struck Yadav above his right eye and the MI batter was forced off-field to receive treatment. In this match, Mumbai Indians finally managed to open their score account as they marked their maiden win by taking Delhi Capitals down by six wickets.
