In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 contest between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 30, the visiting side clinched a relatively convincing four-wicket victory. Bowling first after winning the toss, Punjab looked dominating as they delivered three blows to Chennai in the form of Shaik Rasheed, Ayush Mhatre, and Ravindra Jadeja. However, Sam Curran held his nerves and stitched a key partnership of 78 runs with Dewald Brevis for the fourth wicket. The Protea got back to the dugout after scoring 32 off 26 but Curran went on to score his fifth IPL half-century. The England all-rounder concluded his innings after scoring 88 off just 47.
After the 26-year-old’s batting heroics, Yuzvendra Chahal stepped up for PBKS in the penultimate over of the first innings and bagged his second IPL hat-trick to bundle out the home side on 190 in 19.2 overs. His three notable hunts were Deepak Hooda, Anshul Kamboj, and Noor Ahmad. Before getting the better of these three players, the spin wizard dismissed CSK captain MS Dhoni in the same over. Chahal ended his spell with 4/32 figures in three overs.
Shreyas Iyer and Prabhsimran Singh guide PBKS to comfortable win
Chasing the target, Punjab openers Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya batted ferociously and added 44 runs for the opening wicket in just 28 balls. Arya fell against Khaleel Ahmed and went back to the pavilion after scoring quick 23 off 15. Captain Shreyas Iyer and Prabhsimran pummelled CSK’s bowling attack and maintained a 72-run partnership.
Prabhsimran notched up 54 runs off 36 balls while Shreyas also struck a brilliant 72 off 41. Riding on their knocks, Punjab chased down the target with two balls to spare in the match. With the defeat against PBKS, Chennai’s chances to qualify for the playoffs have officially ended.
