Former Everton striker and free agent Dominic Calvert-Lewin will reportedly be undergoing a medical at Leeds United as he has signed an agreement with the club, who are newly promoted in the Premier League. With this, Calvert has finally put a full stop to his nine-year-old tenure at Everton, which was also an "incredibly difficult decision". For Everton, he scored 71 goals in 273 appearances.
His move to Elland Road, where he is set to become the eighth signing of a hectic summer, would mark a return to his native Yorkshire for the former Sheffield United player. At Leeds, Calvert-Lewin would battle with ex-Wolfsburg striker Lukas Nmecha and last season’s Championship top scorer, Joel Piroe, for a spot in Daniel Farke’s starting XI at Leeds United.
Calvert-Lewin’s standout campaign came in 2020-21, when he netted 16 goals in 33 Premier League appearances and was included in the England squad that reached the UEFA European Championship final that summer. However, Calvert has had bad seasons recently due to injuries. Over the years, the 28-year-old earned 11 England caps and scored four goals.
This isn't something I chose lightly: Dominic Calvert-Lewin on his exit from Everton
For Dominic, playing for Everton was quite memorable. In June, while thanking Evertonians, he posted on Instagram, stating, "To Everton Football Club and the Evertonian. After nine remarkable years at this club, I've made the incredibly difficult decision - together with my family - to begin a new chapter in my career. This isn't something I chose lightly. Everton has been my home since I was 19 years old. It's the place that saw potential in me, challenged me to grow, and shaped me both as a footballer and as a man."
Leeds United weren't the only ones who showed interest in the English footballer. Newcastle were also in the queue who put forward their interest in signing the footballer. However, the club didn't go ahead as they thought he was quite an injury-prone player. Fulham forward Rodrigo Muniz was a prominent name on Farke’s attacking shortlist, but if Calvert-Lewin’s medical goes ahead as expected, Leeds is unlikely to pursue him further. Fulham are keen to keep hold of Muniz, though he has recently received a £35 million offer from Atalanta and is also being considered by Newcastle.
