On day 4 of the third Test match at Headingley, England defeated Australia with a margin of three wickets to keep the Ashes 2023 alive. The visitors went into this Test 2-0 ahead in the series, that’s why, a victory at Leeds would have given them an unassailable lead with two matches to play. It was Chris Woakes and Mark Wood, who shared an invaluable 24-run stand on July 9, Sunday, to help the hosts get over the line in an edge-of-the-seat thriller.

Notably, on day 1 of the Ashes Test match in Leeds, England captain Ben Stokes had won the toss and chose to field first. His decision was proven successful as the Australians were bundled out for 263 runs within 61 overs in their first innings, thanks mainly to the five-wicket haul from Mark Wood.

In response, the English didn’t bat well for most of their first innings, but a spirited effort from Ben Stokes helped them post a total of 237 runs on the board, just 26 runs behind the visitors. Australia captain was the pick of the bowlers, taking a six-wicket haul in no time at Headingley.

Travis Head scored an enterprising 77 in front of a miserly bowling display from England in the second innings of Australia. But still, they were restricted to a paltry total of 224 in ever-improving batting conditions, setting up a target of 251 for the hosts to chase down.

Harry Brook guides England to Ashes Test victory with quick-fire innings of 75

Before the start of play on day 4 at Headingley in Leeds, England were 27/0, needing 224 more runs to make a comeback in the series. But, at one point during today’s play, the English were 171-6 with Harry Brook, the last recognised batter, at the crease in front of the Aussie bowlers.

The 24-year-old was joined by Chris Woakes in the middle, with whom he put together a match-defining partnership of 59 runs, to put the hosts within touching distance of the win. After Harry Brook got out for a quick-fire 75, it was Mark Wood, who joined the veteran fast bowler to ensure that England are only one Test down against Australia in the Ashes series with two matches remaining.
