Matchweek three of the top five leagues in Europe saw some thrilling and exciting action as Barcelona’s topsy-turvy away game against Villareal saw seven goals while Liverpool came back from a goal down despite having 10 men. After the weekend matches so far, Manchester City sit at the top of the Premier League standings, while Real Madrid locks in the top spot in La Liga after three games.
Here is a summary of the results of all the important games in Europe over this weekend:
Premier League 2023-24
Chelsea 3:0 Luton Town
The North London Club comfortably beat the newcomers with a brace from Raheem Sterling and a goal from Nicolas Jackson. This was Chelsea's first Premier League win at Stamford Bridge since March (1-0 vs Leeds), ending a run of eight home league games without a victory (D5, L3).
AFC Bournemouth 0:2 Tottenham
James Maddison’s brilliant goal and a Dejan Kulusevski goal gave Ange Postecoglou’s side an easy win over a difficult Bournemouth.
Arsenal 2:2 Fulham
Arsenal and Fulham played out a draw as a 10-man Fulham came back against the Gunners. Joao Palhinha stunned Arsenal with a late equalizer to claim a dramatic draw at the Emirates and end Arsenal’s perfect start to the Premier League season.
Manchester United 3:2 Nottingham Forest
Ten Haag’s Manchester United came from two goals behind inside four minutes to win 3-2 against 10-player Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford. Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, and Bruno Fernandes scored for the hosts.
Sheffield United 1:2 Manchester City
In a match filled with drama, striker Erliing Halaand missed a penalty just to score a header later on. After a late equalizer from United later on in the 85th minute, the game looked to be destined for a draw, but midfielder Rodri came in with a clutch winning goal again.
Newcastle United 1:2 Liverpool
A brace from inconsistent Darwin Nunez gave a 10-man Liverpool a comeback win over a strong Newcastle United side. Defender Virgil Van Dijik was shown a straight red in the 28th minute.
La Liga 2023-24
Villareal 3:4 Barcelona
The Estadio de la Ceramica was treated to an exciting game of football as Villarreal and Barcelona served up a goal fest. The Blaugrana looked in the ascendancy after Gavi and Frenkie de Jong gave them a two-goal advantage, but Villarreal hit back, and it took goals from Ferran Torres and Robert Lewandowski to rescue the Champions. 16-year-old Lamine Yamal’s performance in this game earned a standing ovation from the crowd and a MOTM award.
Celta Vigo 0:1 Real Madrid
Jude Bellingham has been a hell of a signing for the Los Blancos as the attacking midfielder has slotted in perfectly and scored another match-winning goal to give them the three points. Jude Bellingham has scored at least one goal in all three of his games, and if he finds the back of the net against Getafe, he will match Cristiano Ronaldo’s start to his Real Madrid career.
