Former Australia captain Steve Waugh feels Rohit Sharma can’t berelaxed if he wants to play for India for a few more years. The Indian skipper came under fierce criticism for his underwhelming performance in Test cricket following the home series against New Zealand in October and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 down under played from November 2024 to January 2025. In both series, he looked completely out of rhythm as leader and batter, which gave an opportunity to his critics to berate him. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) hasn’t lost faith in the veteran as the 37-year-old will be seen captaining the team in the upcoming five-match Test series against England.
Talking about Rohit’s future, former Aussie skipper Waugh said Rohit is the only person who can solve the problem when it comes to continue playing cricket for India. “It is totally up to him. He is the only one who can solve that problem. He has got to look himself in the mirror and say, do I still want to be captain or play for India? Am I committed? "Am I putting enough time and effort into it? It is a privilege and an honour to play for your country. You can't be complacent or relax," said Waugh to PTI at the Laureus World Sports Academy Awards 2025.
India will begin their England Test campaign on June 20
Currently, Rohit Sharma and all other Team India members are busy in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. However, after 25 days of the conclusion of the cash-rich league, Rohit and his men will kick off their England tour in the first Test against Ben Stokes and co. at the Yorkshire Cricket Ground on June 20.
Before the India-England rivalry, Test cricket fans will get to watch the mouth-watering contest between Australia and South Africa in the World Test Championship 2023-25 final at the Lord’s from June 11 to 16. Pat Cummins will look to help his team retain the title, which the Aussies won after beating India in the 2021-23 edition of the tournament’s final.
