In the era of T20 cricket, the teams look to get the full advantage of the powerplay, i.e. first six overs of the innings. In these first six overs, only two fielders are placed outside the 30-yard circle which lets the batters take more risks and try to hit the maximum number of boundaries on those 36 balls which could set the momentum for the entire 20 overs.
Sunrisers Hyderabad, who boast the record for the highest-ever IPL team total of 287/3, also top the list for the smashing most runs in the first six overs of the innings in the history of the IPL. Openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma smashed 125 runs in the first six overs in a match against Delhi Capitals at Arun Jaitley stadium on April 20, 2024.
However, talking about the batter with most runs in the powerplay in an IPL match, Chennai Super Kings’ star Suresh Raina tops the list for his fiery batting against Kings XI Punjab in the second qualifier of the IPL 2014. The left-hander smashed 87 runs off just 25 balls as CSK smashed 100 runs in the power plays while chasing 227 runs. However, his effort went in vain as CSK lost the match by 24 runs.
