Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo felt surprised to see his name being shortlisted among the top eight players for the Premier League player of the season award. After scoring 18 goals and providing seven assists in 36 league matches in the ongoing 2024-25 season, the Cameroon international spoke about how he didn’t expect to get the nomination despite having a good year for Brentford up front.
Notably, the list of eight players for the Premier League player of the year award includes Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford alongside Liverpool players Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Ryan Gravenberch, Nottingham Forest players Chris Wood and Morgan Gibbs-While, Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, and Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice. With his splendid performances in the league this season, he has put Brentford within touching distance of European football for the first-time ever.
Bryan Mbeumo joined Brentford during their Championship days in the summer of 2019 from Troyes, and the progression of both the club and player have been exemplary for the last six years. Brentford are currently in eight place in the Premier League with 55 points, ahead of Brighton on goal difference, and with just two matches remaining in the season, it could get rewarded into a UEFA Europa Conference league spot if the necessary permutations and combinations play out.
Players other than me could have deserved a nomination as well: Bryan Mbeumo
While speaking to BBC Sport Africa, Bryan Mbeumo was quoted as saying about his Premier League player of the year award nomination, “I didn't really expect it. I know I have [had] a good season, but I was surprised when I've seen my name there.” After scoring 40 goals in the Premier League for Brentford, he is also their second highest goal-scorer since they first clinched promotion nearly six years ago.
He also spoke about how his association with Brentford changed his life, stating that “This club bring me everything. They gave me confidence and I feel very happy to achieve this season here. With the group we have, it is just such a good life here. Players other than me could have deserved a nomination as well. That shows that the club is improving a lot.”
