The Indian hockey team registered an emphatic victory against Great Britain in the quarter-finals of the men’s hockey competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Despite playing with one less player, India didn’t let Great Britain take a lead as the scoreline was 1-1 in full time. After that, India went on to score four straight goals in the penalty shoot-out to register a famous Olympics win and qualify for the semi-finals. 

Now, India are just one win away from their 13th medal in the Olympics in hockey and two wins away from their ninth Olympics gold. They will face Germany in the semi-finals at the Paris 2024 on Tuesday, August 6.

The first-ever Olympics medal for the Indian hockey team came during the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. It was a start of India's dominance in world hockey. India clinched a gold medal in that edition with Dhyan Chand emerging as a hero with 15 goals. 

Los Angeles 1932 Olympics

India successfully defended their gold medal at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics with Dhyan Chand again turning out to be a hero of Indian hockey at the world stage. India defeated the USA by 24-1 in the final to add another Olympics gold in their cabinet.

Berlin 1936 Olympics

The Indian hockey team completed a hat-trick of gold medal wins at the Olympics as they became champions in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. This time too, Dhyan Chand was the best performer for the Indian team. The Indian team defeated Germany by 8-1 margin in the final to clinch their third Olympics gold.

The first Olympic gold medal for the Indian hockey team post-independence came at the 1948 London Olympics. This time, India defeated Great Britain in the final of the men’s hockey event and clinched their fourth Olympics gold.

Helsinki  1952 Olympics

The Indian hockey team went on to win their fifth Olympics gold at the 1952 Helsinki Games. This time Balbir Singh Sr. turned out to be a hero with five goals as India defeated Netherlands by 6-1 in the final to add another medal in their bag

Melbourne 1956 Olympics

India registered another hat-trick of the Olympic gold medals in the year 1956. The Indian team remained unbeaten throughout the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and went to defeat their arch-rivals Pakistan by 1-0 in the final to win their sixth Olympic gold in hockey.

India had a dominant campaign throughout the 1960 Rome Olympics and advanced in the final once again. However, this time, the result didn't go in India’s favour as they lost to Pakistan by 0-1 and ended up winning the silver medal.

Tokyo 1964 Olympics

The Indian hockey team didn’t have to wait much longer for their seventh Olympic gold as they repeated the triumph again at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. This time also, the final was against Pakistan, and India went on to win that game by 1-0 to win their eighth Olympics medal. 

Mexico 1968 Olympics

The first bronze medal in Olympics for the Indian hockey team came at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. This time, India couldn’t make into the final as the lost their semi-final against Australia by 1-2. However, they still had a chance to win a bronze medal and went on to defeat West Germany by 2-1 margin to add another Olympic medal in the list. 

Munich 1972 Olympics

Another Olympic bronze medal for the Indian hockey team came at the 1972 Munich Olympics. This time, it was Pakistan who prevented India to play another Olympic final with 2-0 win in the semi-final. However, India went on to defeat Netherlands by 2-1 margin to win a bronze medal. 

Moscow 1980 Olympics

After winning bronze medals in the previous two editions, the Indian hockey team finally won a gold medal during the 1980 Moscow Olympics, ending their 16-year wait. This time, India defeated Spain by 4-3 scoreline in the final to win their eighth gold medal in the Olympics in hockey.

Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Having won their last medal in 1980, it took India 41 years to win an Olympics medal in hockey, which came at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. After losing the semi-final against Belgium, India went on to defeat Germany by 5-4 margin in the bronze medal match and won their 12th medal in Olympics in hockey.
