With their 21st loss of the ongoing 2024-25 Premier League season, Ipswich Town have been relegated to the Championship, the second tier of English football. In their 34th match of the Premier League, Ipswich Town needed to defeat Newcastle United away at St James’ Park apart from other results going their way, to keep their hopes alive of staying in the English top-flight, but it wasn’t to be as the hosts won the contest comfortably with a 3-0 scoreline.

In the first half, Ipswich Town were dealt a big blow when Ben Johnson was sent off after receiving the second yellow card in the 37th minute, and from that point onwards, hosts Newcastle United gained complete control of the Premier League contest. Alexander Isak gave the lead to the hosts in the first half added-time after converting a penalty which was given following a pitchside review by referee Michael Salisbury as suggested by video assistant review (VAR).

All relegated teams confirmed with four matches remaining in Premier League for the first-time ever

Dan Burn made it 2-0 at the start of the second half in the 56th minute with a header from close range, directing Kieran Trippier’s cross into the back of the net. Will Osula, who was brought on as a substitute, scored his first goal in the Premier League with a header in the 80th minute, to put the contest firmly beyond Ipswich Town, and ultimately, confirm their relegation from the English top-flight.

Notably, this is the first-time in the history of the Premier League that all the three relegated teams from the competition got confirmed with four matches still remaining in the season with Southampton and Leicester City already dropping out to the Championship. In their official statement on X after being relegated from the Premier League, Ipswich Town wrote, “Following back-to-back promotions to the top tier of English football, today's result confirms our relegation from the Premier League. We've fought all season with you always behind us, Town fans.”
