Lanka Premier League (LPL) will be back with its sixth edition on November 27, 2025, announced by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Friday, August 1. The competition will be held across three venues, Colombo, Dambulla, and Kandy, until December 23. In the five-team T20 tournament, Jaffna Kings are the most successful with four titles in five seasons. In 2023, B-Love Kandy became the second side to win the title in the league after beating Dambula Aura at the R. Premadasa Stadium. Last year, Jaffna became the champions after beating Galle Marvels in the final held in Colombo. This will be the fourth instance when LPL will be conducted during November-December. However, the previous couple of editions were played during July and August.

LPL tournament director Samantha Dodanwela has revealed that the plan behind organising the league’s this season at the year’s end serves the objective of aligning the tournament with the ICC men's T20 World Cup 2026, which will be played in Sri Lanka and India in February-March 2026. "The idea to conduct the LPL during this time frame is aimed at aligning the tournament with the ICC men's T20 World Cup 2026," said Dodanwela.

LPL envisaging to introduce the sixth team in the tournament

As per ESPNcricinfo, discussions are going on that LPL is envisaging to induct the sixth side in the tournament. So far five teams Colombo, Dambulla, Jaffna, Galle, and Kandy competed among one another in the initial five seasons. "Potential owners for a sixth team are currently being vetted," remarked Dodanwela.

Dodanwela also divulged that SLC is looking to curate more batting-friendly pitches, with the objective of gearing up players for the kind of surfaces they are likely to play on during the T20 World Cup 2026. "We were quite happy with the wickets during the last edition, particularly in Dambulla and Kandy. We saw lots of high scores and even some centuries during that portion of the tournament. It was only in Colombo where batting was a little harder," added Dodanwela.
