The 19th edition of the Asian Games 2023 kicked off in Hangzhou, China in a glitchy and grand opening ceremony on Saturday, September 23. The ceremony was attended by leaders from countries including Cambodia, Syria, Nepal, South Korea and Malaysia. The glittering event started with a performance, Water in Autumn Glow, which paid tribute to the Chinese heritage and technological advancements. 

The opening ceremony of the 19th continental multi-sport event displayed brilliant use of Artificial Intelligence, all while being an eco-friendly affair. The performance was then followed by the entry of the Republic of China’s national flag and their national anthem. As the evening proceeded, participating teams led by their flag bearers marched in front of the audience. 

Speaking of it, boxer Lovlina Borgohain and men’s hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh were India’s flag bearers in the ceremony that officially declared the Asian Games 2023 open. The tournament has 45 countries and territories across Asia participating in 40 sports events across 61 disciplines.

The Indian contingent sent for the continental spectacle consists of 921 members, including 655 athletes, 260 coaches and supporting staff members. The Olympic Council of Asia’s Acting President Randhir Singh, International Olympic Committee (IOC) head Thomas Bach, officials of National Olympic Committees and others too graced the occasion.
