Madrid Masters 2023: PV Sindhu settles for Silver after losing to Georgia Mariska in final

The reigning Commonwealth Games champion contested her first final since the 2022 edition of the CWG held in Madrid.

PV Sindhu took down Singapore’s Yeo Jia Min in the semifinal of the tournament and paved her way to her first final of the year pulling off a 24-22, 22-20 win. The two-time Olympic medallist, PV Sindhu lost to Georgia Mariska in a one-sided final of the the Spain Masters 2023 on April 2, 2023, Sunday. In a hard 30-minute long final battle, the latter defeated Sindhu 21-8, 21-8. 

Before that, World No.11 had clashed against Singapore’s Yeo Jia Min in the Semis of the tournament played on Saturday. India’s badminton ace, Sindhu had registered 24-22, 22-20 victory against her Indonesian rival in the semi-final game that lasted for 48 minutes. On the other hand, World No. 12, Georgia crossed swords with former World Champion, Carolina Marin in a nail-biting game and took her down by 10-21, 21-15, 21-10 to reach the final. 

The star Indian shuttler came back to court after a five-month injury layoff. The reigning Commonwealth Games champion contested her first final since the 2022 edition of the CWG held in Madrid. 

Mariska, 23-year-old ace shuttler, is a former junior world champion and reached the finals of the Australian Open 2022, where she was defeated by the South Korean shuttler, An Se-young.
