In a rare incident, Maharashtra police have booked a cricketer in the state for fudging age. A cricketer from Malegaon, Amol Kolpe, was booked by the Baramati City police last Saturday. Kolpe who was on a three-day police custody remand, was sent on a 14-day magisterial custody by the Baramati court on Tuesday. Amol has now an option of moving a plea for regular bail.

Kolpe had submitted his documents for the qualifying round of the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA)’s Under-19 invitation league matches that were held in January this year. According to the documents, Amol’s date of birth was September 28, 2007. However, as per an inquiry, older documents exist that state that his date of birth is February 15, 1999. A complaint was registered by Nana Satav, representative of the Karbhari Club, claiming to be in an aggrieved party being in the same group as Kolpe’s club, after which police arrested Amol. As per the complaint, Amol submitted fake documents to fudge his age.

"We had verified the documents submitted by the complainant. Post verification, we questioned the Malegaon boy on the issue of hiding his real age and later arrested him. On Sunday, a magisterial court had ordered his three-day custodial remand which ended on Tuesday. Now that he has been sent to magisterial custody, he can seek a regular bail,” Inspector Sunil Mahadik was quoted by the Times of India.

Meanwhile, the complainant Nana Satav, a former GST commissioner, told TOI that playing despite being overage is unfair to the careers of the boys who follow rules and regulations. He said, “I approached the police because of the incompetent handling of the case by the authorities concerned. Not addressing the overage issue properly is nothing but playing with the careers of those young players who follow the regulations.”
