On Saturday, August 9, Manchester United confirmed the signing of Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko, 22, from RB Leipzig on a five-year contract until June 2030, making him the third major incoming in the ongoing summer transfer window after Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. It is understood that the deal is worth £73.7 million, which includes a guaranteed payment of £66.3 million, while the remaining amount will be in add-ons.
Notably, over the past couple of seasons, Benjamin Sesko has put his name on the top of the list for most goals scored by any player under the age of 23 in the top five leagues of Europe. In the last season for the German club RB Leipzig, he netted 21 times and provided six assists across all competitions at such a young age, enhancing his stature among some of the top young players in the world.
The history of Manchester United is obviously very special but what really excites me is the future: Benjamin Sesko
Apart from his heroics in club football, Benjamin Sesko has been an important part of Slovenia men’s national team since becoming the youngest-ever debutant for his country four years ago, scoring 16 goals in 41 appearances. In his first words after singing for Manchester United, he said, “The history of Manchester United is obviously very special but what really excites me is the future.”
“When we discussed the project, it was clear that everything is in place for this team to continue to grow and compete for the biggest trophies again soon. From the moment that I arrived, I could feel the positive energy and family environment that the club has created. It is clearly the perfect place to reach my maximum level and fulfil all of my ambitions,” remarked Benjamin Sesko, who believes that Manchester United will help him get to new heights in his career.
The Slovenian also sounded excited about working with Ruben Amorim, the Manchester United manager, who will be looking to bring the best out of the youngster and take the club back to their glory days. “I cannot wait to start learning from Ruben [Amorim] and connecting with my team-mates to achieve the success that we all know we are capable of together,” added the 22-year-old.
