Team India skipper Rohit Sharma has been amid a lot of criticism after he failed to get runs on the board once again in the first innings of the ongoing fourth Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). While the 37-year-old scored only three runs off five deliveries, it mounted on his current poor run of form.
Notably, Rohit Sharma has scored only 155 runs in 14 knocks over the past three months. His average stands at 11, comprising of only one fifty-plus score. Moreover, his dismal batting compounds by a 0-3 series loss against New Zealand at home and a 10-wicket defeat in the day-night Test at the Adelaide Oval. With reports claiming that Rohit Sharma might retire from Test cricket at the conclusion of BGT 2024-25, former Australia cricket Mark Waugh has also sent an end of career warning.
Thank you for your service..: Mark Waugh’s stern take on Rohit Sharma’s poor run
Speaking on Fox Cricket, former Australia cricketer Mark Waugh exclaimed that if he was an Indian selector and if Rohit Sharma failed to perform with the bat in the second innings of the Boxing Day Test, he would bid him goodbye from the helm and appoint Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah as the captain for Sydney Test. "If I was a selector now, it depends on what happens in the second innings, but if he doesn't make runs in the second innings and we go to Sydney in a crucial Test, I'd be saying 'Rohit thank you for your service, you've been a great player, but we're going to bring in Jasprit Bumrah as captain for the SCG and that's the end of your career," Waugh said.
"... it'd be a very tough way for Rohit Sharma to go, his last 14 innings' he's averaging 11, so the signs are there that he's past his best. It happens to all players. All great players come to an end at some stage," Waugh added. It is to be noted that Rohit Sharma along with lacking to get runs with the bat, has also failed to lead the side. Moreover, in Rohit Sharma’s absence for the Perth Test, Jasprit Bumrah led the side to a dominating 295-run win against Australia.
