Hours before Virat Kohli’s retirement, former England captain Michael Vaughan urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to appoint the batting maestro as Test captain. After Rohit Sharma’s Test retirement, India’s leadership spot is vacant. With reports of Kohli expressing his intention to retire from cricket’s longest format, former English player has come up with an eye-grabbing suggestion. India will play a five-match Test series in England from June 20 to August 4, and during this period, they will be expected to showcase their best to win the Test series on English soil after 18 years. In their last couple Test assignments in England, India played under Kohli and succeeded in levelling the series in the 2021-22 competition.

On his social media post, Vaughan suggested Kohli and Shubman Gill to be appointed as captain and vice-captain respectively. Taking to X, the 50-year-old  English legend wrote, "If I was India I would give the captaincy to Virat for the Test series in England .. Shubman Gill can be his VC for the tour,"

However, Michael Vaughan's post would not make sense now as Virat Kohli officially called off his career from the longest format of the game. The 36-year-old shared a post on his Instagram where he wrote "As I step away from this format, it’s not easy — but it feels right. I’ve given it everything I had, and it’s given me back so much more than I could’ve hoped for."

India looked disorganised in the last couple of Test series

In their last couple of Test series, Team India looked completely disorganised which resulted in their humiliating defeats. In October 2024, they faced a massive 0-3 defeat as hosts at the hands of New Zealand. That was India’s first Test series loss at home after 12 years. Following that thumping, they got a 1-3 hammering in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 played in Australia from November 2024 to January 2025.

Noting these circumstances, Team India will have to recollect themselves to make a comeback in England. The task won’t be easy for the two-time World Test Championship (WTC) runners-up as they will be playing without the services of their legends Rohit and Kohli.
