Legend Virat Kohli announced his retirement from international Test cricket after serving India for 14 years in the format. After Rohit Sharma’s retirement from red-ball cricket on May 7, reports emerged that Kohli can also follow Rohit’s footsteps and hang up his boots from the format. On May 12, Kohli took to his Instagram handle and wrote a long note to bid adieu from the format. His decision has stunned Team India supporters and they are now failing to accept the fact that their star player won’t be seen in India whites again.
On social media sites, Team India fans are finding it difficult to process that within a week two legends said goodbye to Test cricket. An X user named Pari took to X and wrote, “It will take a while to process it. Test Cricket will never be the same without Virat Kohli.” Another social media user named Sagar wrote, “Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket with a legacy that can't be measured in numbers. Not just a great batter. A relentless leader. A generational mindset. He made fitness non-negotiable, pace a priority, and made India believe it could win anywhere.”
Virat Kohli’s underwhelming performance in couple of Test series created pressure on him
Virat Kohli’s underwhelming performance in the last couple of Test series created pressure on him. The veteran was getting heavily criticised for his failure to tackle outside off-stump deliveries during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 played in Australia. During the tour down under, the star player could score only 190 runs in nine innings of five matches.
With his retirement, India will now have to get a middle-order batter, who can deliver fine numbers to them. After legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar’s retirement from international cricket in 2013, Kohli handled the responsibility as number four batter efficiently in red-ball cricket.
