On Sunday, August 17, Newcastle United confirmed the signing of midfielder Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa for a reported transfer fee of £40 million in the ongoing summer transfer window. It is understood that the 24-year-old has put pen to paper consisting of a five-year contract, becoming the fourth signing of Newcastle United this summer under manager Eddie Howe just a day after his team drew 0-0 in their Premier League opener against Aston Villa at the Villa Park.
Notably, in his young career, which began at the Aston Villa academy, Jacob Ramsey made 167 appearances for the West Midlands club, scoring 17 goals and providing 19 assists. Newcastle United brought in the former England Under-21 into the mix to bolster their midfield, which needs impetus since the club is set to play not only the Premier League, but also the UEFA Champions League while the two cup competitions can’t be understated.
It didn't take much time to decide: Jacob Ramsey on decision to join Newcastle United
In his first comments after joining Newcastle United, Jacob Ramsey told the club website about how the decision to join them was quite a straight forward one. He was saying, “This is a big move for me, but as soon as I knew the gaffer was interested and really liked me, it didn't take much time to decide. It was always a tough game playing for Villa against Newcastle - the team is full of energy, so athletic and the fans are so passionate. I feel my game will suit that and I'm excited to be on the other end of it now.”
Eddie Howe, the Newcastle United manager, was quite happy with the signing of Jacob Ramsey - who will wear number 41 shirt at the club - calling him “another fantastic addition” to their squad. He also remarked, “His qualities will bring us something different on the pitch and he fits the profile of being young and hungry to develop, but also with a wealth of Premier League football under his belt.”
“Jacob offers versatility and his directness in attack has proven to be a real threat at this level in recent seasons. He performed very well in the Champions League last season too and we believe he'll be a major asset for us,” Eddie Howe further added.
