Wimbledon 2022 runner-up Nick Kyrgios has pulled out of the Atlanta Open singles draw with a left knee problem ahead of the first match. The 27-year-old was scheduled to take on German Peter Gojowczyk in his opening round of the ATP 250 hard court event in Georgia. However, the Australian revealed that he will be withdrawing away from the men's singles category.
While notifying about his decision, Nick Kyrgios said that he is extremely shattered about the fact that he will not be able to compete in front of fans as he wanted to put on a great show for everyone who came to cheer for him. Kyrgios further claimed that he is playing his best tennis at the moment and wanted to carry forward his form. However, he further informed that he will play doubles with his partner Thanasi Kokkinakis.
"I am extremely sad and shattered by informing you that I won't be able to compete tonight. I have won this tournament once and I am playing probably some of the best tennis of my career. All I wanted to do was come out here and give you guys a show, but I failed to do so and deliver what was expected from me," said Nick Kyrgios. The Australian also put out a two-word tweet showing his frustration at missing out on the tournament by writing, "Always something."
Nick Kyrgios who won this year's Australian Open doubles with compatriot Kokkinakis has progressed to the quarter-finals of the doubles in Atlanta. The men's world number 47 was handed a wildcard into next month's Western & Southern Open, the Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati, Ohio, which will start two weeks before the U.S. Open kicks off in New York on Aug. 29.
Notably, this will be Krygios' sixth appearance in Cincinnati and first since 2019. The entry list for the August 13-21 Western & Southern Open includes world number one Daniil Medvedev and former champions Alexander Zverev, who missed Wimbledon 2022 due to injury.
