India's performance at the BWF World Championships has changed dramatically over the years. There was a time when even one medal felt like a major achievement. But these days Indian players arrive at the tournament with genuine expectations of going deep into the draw and getting medals.

India's Best Performances at the BWF World Championships
From Prakash Padukone's historic medal to PV Sindhu finally winning gold after several near misses, India's best World Championships moments have come in very different ways. Saina Nehwal, Kidambi Srikanth, Lakshya Sen, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa have also played their part in building that history.
1. PV Sindhu – Gold (2019)
PV Sindhu had already come close more times than she would probably have liked. She had won two silver medals and two bronze medals at the World Championships before arriving in Basel in 2019. Sindhu beat Japan's Nozomi Okuhara in the final and finally became world champion. It was India's first World Championships gold in badminton and the moment that completed one of the most remarkable journeys in the tournament's history.
2. Saina Nehwal – The first Indian singles finalist in 2015
Before PV Sindhu reached four World Championships finals, Saina Nehwal had already broken a record that had stood for years. In 2015, she became the first Indian badminton player to reach a singles final at the World Championships. She lost to Carolina Marin in the Final, but the silver medal was still a landmark achievement. Saina had shown that an Indian singles player could go all the way in one of badminton's biggest tournaments.
3. Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya Sen – Men's double podium finish in 2021
The 2021 World Championships in Huelva produced a special moment for Indian men's badminton. Kidambi Srikanth reached the final and won silver while Lakshya Sen took bronze.
Srikanth's run was historic making him the first Indian man to win a World Championships singles silver medal. But having two Indian men's singles players on the podium at the same edition made the achievement even more significant.
4. Prakash Padukone – 1983 Bronze
The legacy of Indian badminton success was due to this event which took place several decades ago. Prakash Padukone was one of the first players to win a medal.
His medal at the 1983 World Championships gave India its first podium finish at the tournament. It came at a time when Indian badminton did not have stars or resources . Padukone's achievement was nothing short of greatness and it's one of the best ever moments.
5. Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa – Women's doubles Bronze in 2011
India's World Championships medals were mostly from singles. Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa changed that in 2011 when the pair won bronze in women's doubles, giving India its first World Championships medal in the discipline. It was an important moment for Indian doubles badminton and showed that the country could compete on the biggest stage outside the singles events too.
