Indian cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar has a record for most number of centuries in international cricket. The former cricketer has 100 centuries to his name, including 51 in Tests, and 49 in ODIs. After making his international debut in 1989, Sachin Tendulkar didn’t take much time to bring up his maiden Test hundred, scoring 119 not out against England at Old Trafford, Manchester in 1990.
However, Sachin Tendulkar had to wait for five years and 78 innings to score his first hundred in the ODI format. The right-hander scored a match-winning ton against Australia in Colombo during the Singer World Series on September 9, 1994. This was his first among 49 centuries in ODI cricket.
Sachin Tendulkar’s ton lead India to convincing win over Australia
Batting first, India posted a total of 246 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their 50 overs in the Singer World Series 1994 clash. Opening the innings with Manoj Prabhakar, Sachin Tendulkar went on to score 110 runs in 130 balls with eight fours and two sixes. This was Tendulkar’s first-ever hundred in One-Day Internationals.
Coming to chase the 247-run target, Australia were bowled out for 215 runs in 47.4 overs. Mark Waugh was the top scorer with 61 runs off 81 balls, an innings which had only three fours. For India, Manoj Prabhakar took three wickets, conceding 34 runs in his eight-over spell.
Sachin Tendulkar won the Player of the Match award for his maiden ODI ton. Recalling his stint with Team India, the 'God of Cricket' reached the 49 centuries mark in ODIs, and he had a record for most hundreds in the format before Virat Kohli surpassed him to score 50 centuries. Sachin Tendulkar is also the all-time highest run-scorer in ODI cricket with 18426 runs in 463 matches at an average of 44.83.
