India’s star table tennis player, Sreeja Akula on Wednesday, July 31 went down against World No. 1 Yingsha Sun of China in the pre-quarterfinals of the women’s singles at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Sreeja, who became only the second Indian to enter the pre-quarters in table tennis in the Olympics after Manika Batra, bowed out of the tournament, marking her round of 16 exit.
The 26-year-old, who also celebrated her birthday on July 31, lost 10-12, 10-12, 8-11, 3-11 to the top-ranked player in the game in a match which lasted for 38 minutes. Earlier in the day, Sreeja defeated Singapore’s Jian Zeng in the round of 32 by a margin of 4-2. The Indian cruised past her Singapore opponent with the scores of 9-11, 12-10, 11-4, 11-5, 10-12 and 12-10.
Manika Batra bows out of women’s singles after defeat against Miu Hirano of Japan
Star Indian paddler, Manika Batra, who became the first Indian athlete to enter the pre-quarterfinals of the Summer Games also suffered a loss in the pre-quarters against Miu Hirano of Japan. The 29-year-old lost 11-6, 11-9, 14-12, 11-8 and 11-6, ending her dominant run at the Paris Olympics.
