Former Team India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has backed Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah for India's Test captaincy role. With Rohit Sharma’s Test retirement on May 7, there is a leadership vacuum in Team India’s red-ball side. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has got the massive responsibility to pick up a captain who can deliver effective results to the team in cricket’s oldest format for a long time. As per reports, Shubman Gill is the biggest contender to get the top role but Ashwin believes Bumrah should be talked about for the huge responsibility as the 38-year-old feels that the pacer’s fitness won’t impede him from fulfilling the leadership role smoothly.
Besides Bumrah, Ashwin also said that veteran Jadeja should also be considered for the role for a couple of years. Speaking on his YouTube channel ‘Ash Ki Baat', former India spinner said, "First of all, everyone is saying that Gill is the captain. Everyone is going in that direction. But there is a loud option in Jasprit Bumrah, and why do we forget about Ravindra Jadeja. If you are willing to go for a new person as captain, I would say why not make him (Gill) an understudy of an experienced guy for two years before handing him the job on a full-time basis."
Talking more about Bumrah, Ashwin remarked, "Look at Pat Cummins, he also had a back stress fracture, but he is now captaining Australia in Tests and ODIs. Like that, Bumrah is our national treasure and he should be in the discussion."
Team India fans will expect their team to play well in five-match Test series in England
Team India supporters will want their team to display their courageous side in England in the upcoming five-match Test series. After the 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand in the home Test series in October 2024 and 3-1 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, India head coach Gautam Gambhir will also have to prove himself in the upcoming England tour.
India have witnessed three major retirements in the last six months. In December 2024, Ashwin retired from international cricket after appearing against Australia in the Adelaide Test. Following him, Rohit and Virat Kohli hung up their boots from the longest format of the game this month.
