In a shocking twist to Florian Wirtz’s transfer saga, Real Madrid are reportedly looking to hijack the midfielder’s transfer to Liverpool. Wirtz, who is expected to leave Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season, was at the centre of a major transfer battle among multiple top clubs like Bayern Munich and Liverpool. Reputed journalists suggested that Wirtz had made a decision to move to Liverpool but recent reports seem to tell otherwise.
A major reason behind the rumours of Madrid hijacking Wirtz’s transfer is the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the new manager of Real Madrid. The Spainard was in-charge of Bayer Leverkusen previously and has spent a good amount of time with Florian Wirtz in his two seasons in Germany. His presence at the helm of the Real Madrid could play a vital role in convincing Wirtz to join the team. Both Liverpool and Real Madrid, have already made good progress in the transfer market this summer by securing some good signings to bolster their squad and it will be interesting to see where Wirtz is headed.

In a recent personal achievement, Florian Wirtz was named as the Player of the season by the VDV players’ union for the 2024-25 campaign. The 22-year-old midfielder received the award after a stellar season with Bayer Leverkusen at the heart of the team’s midfield. In 45 games across all season, Wirtz scored 16 goals and provided 15 assists. Apart from this, the creative edge and technical flair that he brings to the team is immeasurable by stats.
With Liverpool and Real Madrid now competing to secure the youngster’s signature, it will be interesting to see where Wirtz lands up. Will he choose to play under his former boss Xabi Alonso at the Bernabeu or will he decide to embark on an even newer challenge with Arne Slot at Anfield?
