Liverpool are currently in an uncomfortable stage as Real Madrid is taking steps forward to sign 26-year-old center back player Ibrahima Konate for £25 million. Reports from Fichajes say that the Spanish giant to trying hard to convince Liverpool to let go the Paris international ahead of the schedule. Konate, currently contracted with Liverpool until 2026, has reportedly been on Real Madrid’s radar for several months. The 26-year-old centre-back is highly regarded by the club’s coaching staff for his commanding physicality and valuable experience in high-stakes matches with both Liverpool and the French national team.
According to Football Insider, Liverpool, which earlier had to watch Trent Alexander-Arnold depart to Los Blancos on a free transfer, isn't going to repeat the situation. “Liverpool will be desperate to avoid a situation where Konate could walk out of Anfield on a free in 2026,” said senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke. The publication, back in May revealed that Real Madrid have their eyes set on Konate, and they are planning on singing him on a free transfer next summer if things don't work out now.
Ibrahima Konate's contract extension is priority for Liverpool
Back in April, Liverpool wanted to make an extension for Ibrahima Konate's contract as their priority. Discussions are expected to take place in the coming weeks, as Liverpool are keen to avoid losing another key player to Madrid without receiving a transfer fee. According to Pete O’Rourke, the club is strongly opposed to letting the defender go, which might tempt Madrid to test their resolve with a "cheeky" lowball offer. "
Liverpool will be desperate to avoid a situation where Konate could walk out of Anfield on a free in 2026. Real Madrid will be hoping that’s what will happen," he told Football Insider. However, the club has made it clear that Konate will not be allowed to leave this summer unless a substantial offer is made. As Real Madrid continues to rely on patience and strategic timing, Liverpool must approach the situation with decisiveness and intent.
O’Rourke also mentioned that Konate is currently in “the box position,” which gives him the option to examine his options while talks progress. Madrid is well aware of this—and they also understand that the longer negotiations remain unresolved, the more pressure and uncertainty Liverpool may face.
